This modern three-family house is located in a discreet side street of »8044 Zürichberg« on a plot of land ideally oriented to the southwest. Already at first sight you can see that this is a very special building. Like a purist »Sculpture of Modern Art«, the house is naturally situated on a slope. Up here on the sunny Zürichberg, one lives at a proper distance from the hecticness down in the valley.
Star architect Christian Kerez has moved the load-bearing structure outwards in front of the façade to create impressive spaces without disturbing columns and load-bearing walls. Three pairs of massive steel pillars give the house a striking appearance. The space between the three pairs of columns simultaneously takes on those functions that connect the floors vertically: In the east the open staircase, in the north the glass lift, in the west the building services shaft. Finally, the horizontal steel girders on which the concrete floor slabs lie are attached to the vertical columns.
From the underground car park you can reach the apartment directly by lift. Via entrée-like entrance situations one finally reaches the actual living area. The more than generous, column-free space, which is reminiscent of urban lofts, immediately catches the eye. The boundary between inside and outside space is dissolved by the glass fronts being able to open up generously to the three south-, west- and east-facing outdoor terraces via sliding elements. As if on a private viewing platform, one resides here high above the city on the Limmat and enjoys a breathtaking view across Lake Zurich to the snow-covered peaks of the Alps.
The architecture and design of this extraordinary building are not just a fashionable surface, but the basis for an intellectual concept that fundamentally rethinks current ideas about home and living. Although one resides in an architectural masterpiece, it does not push itself into the foreground, but forms a neutral framework for the individual living arrangements of the residents - Living in a comfortable Sculpture!
