A gem in the romantic chalet style of the Belle Époque

A villa from the Belle Époque still represents the ideal of a luxurious residence today: as a detached individual house in a park-like setting, generously sized, representative and at the same time private. Such a unique property can be found in the privileged villa district of Gsteig, directly west of the historic old town of Burgdorf and only around 20 minutes by car northeast of Bern.

Built in 1893 in chalet style, the “Belle Époque” villa is an exceptional gem that combines historic substance and contemporary living comfort at a high level. Original wall and ceiling paintings, exquisite parquet floors, high-quality paneling, historic tiled stoves and a spacious fireplace characterize the atmosphere of elegance and nobility. The villa is nestled in a park-like plot of land with mature trees; a modern coach house offers space for several vehicles.

Burgdorf combines historical identity with urban diversity. The castle, visible from afar, towers over the picturesque old town with its alleys, shops, markets, cafés and restaurants — all just a few steps away from the villa. Theatre, cinema, museums and a wide range of cultural events characterize city life. Schools, high school and Bern University of Applied Sciences (architecture and timber construction) are within easy walking distance. Thanks to the proximity to the A1 motorway and train stations, there are excellent connections to Bern, Basel, Zurich and Geneva.

The “Gateway to Emmental” offers a wide range of leisure activities: walking and hiking trails through forests and hilly landscapes, panoramic peaks, country inns and typical farmhouses characterize the surrounding area. In winter, the nearby Napf area offers cross-country skiing trails, snowshoe trails and family-friendly ski lifts.

The “Belle Époque” villa was built according to plans by architect Jacques Gros, who also designed the Grand Hotel Dolder in Zurich. Home and chalet style elements are combined with artistic Belle Époque details to create a harmonious overall picture. After extensive renovations 1992/93 and 2022 — 2024 in close cooperation with the Preservation of Historic Monuments, the villa now has a lift, district heating connection, modern building technology and floor heating on the garden level.

The entrance with intricate wall and ceiling painting is the ceremonial prelude to the representative interior of the villa. On the raised ground floor, the living room with terrace, the library with outdoor porch and the pine dining room form an impressive sequence of rooms with a view of the garden. The spacious eat-in kitchen with private terrace ideally complements the ensemble.

On the upper floors, there are several bathrooms, children's rooms, guest rooms and bedrooms as well as a master bedroom with a luxurious ensuite bathroom. The dressing room features particularly rich floral ceiling paintings. Another highlight is the tower room with panoramic views of the iconic peaks of Eiger, Mönch and Jungfrau. The garden floor offers additional, separately accessible rooms with potential for expansion, for example for a separate apartment, a studio, a practice or office use.

Thanks to its location, appearance and room structure, the villa is suitable both as an exclusive family home and multi-generation house, as well as for combining living and working or as a law firm, foundation or representative office. The “Belle Époque” villa is a rare example of how history, style and modern comfort come together to create a harmonious work of art.
