A picture-perfect Appenzell town house
In Teufen, at around 830 metres above sea level, numerous stately bourgeois houses nestle along the sun-facing slope. One of these characteristic historic Appenzell residences is located away from the main road, set within an idyllic garden. »Edelweiss« features an attractive timber façade and the distinctive rows of windows that allow abundant natural light to flood the interior. The extensively renovated property combines traditional charm with contemporary living comfort.
The village of Teufen is distinguished by its rural surroundings, a low tax rate, and its proximity to the cultural city of St. Gallen — with its UNESCO World Heritage Abbey Library and renowned Baroque cathedral. In the 17th century, Teufen evolved from a modest rural community into one of the wealthiest municipalities in the canton. Textile production, milling, watchmaking and spa tourism all contributed to its prosperity. »Edelweiss« and the other bourgeois houses still bear witness to this period of growth and affluence.
Shops, banks, the post office, cafés and restaurants are all within easy walking distance, as are the primary and secondary schools. A cultural trail connects Teufen’s most significant heritage buildings. The former artillery arsenal now serves as a museum of architectural culture and regional history, honouring the work of the renowned Grubenmann family of master builders. Designed by Hans Ulrich Grubenmann — best known for his innovative timber bridges — the Reformed Church of Teufen is another landmark of his legacy.
The Appenzell region, with its gentle hills and scattered traditional settlements, is considered one of the most beautiful landscapes in Switzerland. Walking trails lead directly from the village into the surrounding hills, offering breathtaking views towards the Säntis mountain and across Lake Constance. In winter, cross-country ski trails and small ski areas attract visitors, while in summer the Teufen open-air swimming pool provides refreshment.

Inside »Edelweiss«, a long entrance hall with elegant natural stone flooring and rustic door frames welcomes residents. On either side are two south-facing rooms that can be flexibly used as office space, cloakrooms, living rooms or guest rooms. On the first floor, two interconnected historic parlours form the heart of the house. Fine herringbone parquet, whitewashed timber panelling, a historic wall clock and an impressive tiled stove create a warm and inviting atmosphere, while the adjoining dining room is ideal for entertaining.
To the north, the spacious kitchen adjoins, where a carefully restored traditional stove is combined with modern fittings. From the adjacent balcony, a delicate steel staircase leads directly into the garden. On the second floor, two generous rooms can easily be combined to form a master suite, complemented by a modern bathroom and an additional children’s or guest room. The attic level offers another living or working room with spectacular views, as well as two cosy rooms beneath the roof slopes.
The garden invites relaxation with lush flowering perennials and a gravel seating area. An additional garden plot offers space for a vegetable and fruit garden or a sheltered play area. »Edelweiss« is a versatile Appenzell residence like something out of a picture book, nestled within the vibrant village community of Teufen.
