An eventful history at the transition from the plain to the alpine passes
Where the foothills of the Appenzell Alps reach to the banks of the Rhine and Lake Constance in the extreme northeast of Switzerland, the dream of a peaceful life comes true. If you drive uphill from St. Margrethen towards the Appenzeller Vorderland, you reach a fairytale landscape of green meadows and forests. The vineyards on the mountain slopes belonged to St. Gallen and Bündner patricians up to the 19th century, as the many castles still bear witness to today.
Here, between impressive old trees, lies the Schlössli “Fairy Tale” or also known as the “Schlössli Bergsteig”, with a distinctive round tower and a beautifully curved mansard roof. The property offers breathtaking views of Lake Constance, the Rhine Delta and the mountain peaks of the Bregenz Forest. First mentioned in documents in 1482, Schlössli stands in the middle of its own park with majestic trees, an outdoor pool and a building window in which a modern outbuilding can be built.
“Fairy Tale” keeps a proper distance from the hustle and bustle of the valley. Nevertheless, shops for daily needs, such as several supermarkets, a bakery, banks and restaurants, are close by. The mineral spa with several saunas, indoor, outdoor and hot tubs can also be reached from the property in a very short time.
Even in Roman times, a trunk road led from Brigantium (Bregenz) via Ad Rhenum (St. Margrethen) to Curia (Chur) and on across the alpine passes to Italy. Even today, you can quickly reach proud cities such as St. Gallen, Vaduz, Bregenz and Lindau by car or train. And Altenrhein Airport is also just a stone's throw away.
The selection of leisure activities ranges from water sports on Lake Constance (395 m above sea level) to bird watching in the Altenrhein nature reserve, hiking in rural Appenzell (approx. 650 - 1,150 m above sea level) to climbing in the Alpstein massif with the Säntis (2501 m above sea level). In winter, a family-friendly ski lift is even operated in the nearby spa town of Heiden.
