A Baroque Coffee House with a Wealth of Potential Uses
Schwyz has not only given the Swiss Confederation its name, but also embodies all the qualities that make this country so unique: its privileged setting amidst spectacular scenery, the harmonious interplay of culture and nature, and the perfect balance between tradition and modernity. Here, in the heart of Switzerland, lie the origins of significant events and legends that have shaped Swiss history.
Schwyz nestles at the sunny, sheltered foot of the Mythen mountains, whose distinctive rocky peaks rise majestically into the sky. The magnificent main square, framed by the parish church, town hall and stately historic residences, is considered one of the most beautiful squares in Switzerland. It serves as a vibrant gathering place for important cultural, religious and social occasions.
Situated just a stone’s throw from the main square, this historic residential and commercial property was once home to a café established in 1889, which became renowned far beyond Schwyz for its warm hospitality and exquisite confectionery. While it would be wonderful to see this cherished tradition continued by a new owner, the property also offers exceptional potential for a wide variety of alternative uses.
With such an abundance of natural beauty, it comes as no surprise that the surroundings of Schwyz offer an impressive range of alpine leisure activities. Warm summer days can be spent relaxing by nearby Lake Lauerz or enjoying water sports on Lake Lucerne. In winter, several ski resorts beckon with a variety of slopes catering to different abilities, all conveniently accessible by bus and train.

Built in 1644, this historic Baroque residential and commercial property served as a rectory for many years before being acquired by the Haug family in 1935. From the bustling Postplatz, visitors enter the welcoming retail space housed in the single-storey extension. From here, a few steps lead up to the charming tearoom, adorned with beautiful ornate stucco ceilings. Alternatively, the spacious outdoor terrace invites guests to relax in the sunshine or shade while watching the lively bustle of the street.
The central bar area, with its distinctive semicircular counter, forms the social heart of the former coffee house. To the west, a further light-filled dining room provides an inviting space for guests. One floor above, the charming «Säli» function room offers ample space for larger groups and private gatherings. To the north, a series of fully equipped professional kitchens cater to a wide range of culinary requirements.
If used as a private residence, the middle of the three interconnected rooms on the second floor offers a wonderfully inviting retreat, complete with a historic tiled stove. The spacious master bedroom adjoins this living area to the east. On the northern side, a further bedroom, ideal for children or guests, is complemented by a kitchen and bathroom. The third floor accommodates three additional charming bedrooms, perfectly suited for children or guests, one of which benefits from its own en-suite bathroom.
Nestled amidst magnificent Alpine scenery, the beautifully situated town of Schwyz forms an enchanting world of its own, a place to which one is always delighted to return. Here, everything that makes the Swiss mountains so special comes together. Depending on its future use, this historic residential and commercial property could once again become an important focal point of social life in Schwyz.
