The modern three-family house is located in a discreet side street of “8044 Zürichberg” on a plot of land ideally facing southwest. Even at first glance, you can see that this is a very special building. Like a purist “Sculpture of Modern Art,” the house is naturally situated on a slope. Up here on sunny Zurichberg, you live at a proper distance from the hustle and bustle down in the valley.
Star architect Christian Kerez has moved the load-bearing structure outwards in front of the façade in order to create impressive spaces without annoying supports and load-bearing walls. Three pairs of massive steel pillars give the house a distinctive face. The space between the three pairs of columns simultaneously performs the functions that connect the floors vertically: In the east, the open staircase, in the north, the glass lift, in the west, the building services shaft. The horizontal steel girders, on which the concrete floors lie, are finally mounted on the vertical supports.
From the underground car park, the lift takes you directly to the apartment. Entrance-like entrance situations finally lead to the actual living area. The more than spacious, column-free space, which is reminiscent of urban lofts, immediately catches the eye. The border between interior and exterior space is dissolved by allowing the glass fronts to be opened generously via sliding elements. The huge outdoor terrace is a wonderful place to celebrate luxurious life on Zurichberg high above the city.
The architecture and design of this extraordinary building are not just a fashionable surface, but the basis for an intellectual concept that fundamentally rethinks current ideas about home and living. Although you reside in an architectural masterpiece, this does not come to the foreground, but forms a neutral framework for the residents' individual living arrangements — Living in a comfortable sculpture!
