A Toggenburg gabled house with a magnificent rococo façade

The idyllic Toggenburg stretches with meadows, forests and scattered villages from Wil in the north to Wildhaus at the foot of the Churfirsten in the south. In the Upper Necker Valley, around 250 meters southwest of St. Peterzell, a magnificent gabled house nestles on the meadow slope. The “Sonnental” residential building impresses with a magnificent Rococo façade with 77 different seed seed motifs.

Extensively renovated, “Sonnental” now presents itself as a luxurious residential building with numerous living rooms, bedrooms, bathrooms, sauna and a separate barn. From the property, the view sweeps over the village, across the Neckertal valley to Appenzellerland and Säntis.

The village of St. Peterzell is located at around 710 m above sea level at the crossroads of two Camino de Santiago and was built from a monastery in the 11th century. The Baroque church and provost building still characterize the town today, complemented by picturesque Toggenburg gabled houses. St. Peterzell has primary and secondary schools, village shops, inns and good transport connections. In addition to several post bus lines, there is even an S-Bahn connection from nearby Brunnadern

With the valleys of Thur and Necker, Toggenburg is one of the most beautiful hiking regions in Switzerland — with the popular Klangweg and the new Herzog & de Meuron mountain station on the Chäserrugg and the treetop trail in the Neckertal. In winter, there are panoramic trails in the neighboring village of Hemberg, a long toboggan run on Köbelisberg and a varied 23 and 50 kilometers of slopes in the Wildhaus and Chäserrugg ski areas.

“Sonnental” was built as a hostel in the early 18th century. The magnificent rococo façade was probably made by a wandering painter from Tyrol or Vorarlberg. Marbled friezes, ornate roof basements and 77 different seed beads motifs create dazzling complexity and are reminiscent of modern serial art. The inn contained a “Bädli” with medicinal water, as the old tavern sign also indicates. In 2012, the house was extensively and comprehensively renovated in close cooperation with the Preservation of Monuments. The property also includes the adjacent agricultural land as an option.

Inside, the historic details continue with original doors and other Rococo paintings. The spacious living hall with fireplace and tiled stove stretches across the entire east side, next to it is a wellness area with sauna. On the garden side, the first floor surprises with a magnificent sequence of eat-in kitchen and dining room, in which a series of Rococo wall paintings take up the serial theme of the façade. When the weather is nice, the social gatherings can continue on the south-west-facing terrace.

On the first floor, there is also a master bedroom with a portico south-facing balcony, a guest or children's room and two bathrooms. On the second floor, a light-flooded room opens up, which can be used as a studio, office or further living space. There are also other children's and guest rooms here and on the attic floor.

There is also a large hobby or ski room on the lower garden floor. And the barn with potential for expansion includes a workshop, a gallery with an office and a garage. In “Sonnental”, you can realize your own ideas of life and work in a stylish and practical way. Nature, tradition and modernity form a fruitful combination here.
