Between idyllic countryside and picturesque small town

Where the Rhine leaves Lake Constance, the historic castle-like estate “Wassermusik” rises above Wagenhausen in the canton of Thurgau. Set on an elevated position south of the river, the property enjoys spectacular views across the idyllic landscape towards Hohenklingen Castle, which towers high above the town. The expansive grounds extend all the way down to the Rhine, offering private access to the river and the opportunity for a refreshing swim in its clear waters.

“Wassermusik” is a historic castle-like residence set on a generous waterfront property with its own access to the Rhine. An adjoining wing comprising three apartments may also be acquired separately, if desired.

The nearby village centre offers a Volg grocery store for everyday necessities. Wagenhausen has grown seamlessly together with neighbouring Stein am Rhein, providing access to a wide range of shops, leisure activities, cultural events, cafés and restaurants. The picturesque town is renowned for its exceptionally well-preserved historic centre and magnificent painted façades. The railway station is approximately a ten-minute walk away, while Zurich city centre can be reached by car in around 50 minutes.

Built around 1530 and referred to in historical records as a castle, the property once served as the seat of the Obervogtei Wagenhausen. It has undergone extensive renovation in close collaboration with the heritage conservation authorities, including the careful restoration of the magnificent wall painting dating from 1689 on the north façade.

The entrance is reached through the side wing, where an elegantly curved internal staircase creates an impressive first impression. The magnificent loft-like living hall is defined by the subtle variations in colour of the original stone flooring, giving the space a rich and authentic patina. A soaring beamed ceiling, a monumental timber support and a grand fireplace create a distinctly stately atmosphere. The spacious dining area provides an elegant setting for memorable gatherings and festive dinners.

A light-filled glass volume has been inserted into the side wing, housing a professionally equipped kitchen with high-quality stainless-steel fittings. From here, entertaining flows naturally onto the outdoor terrace, which offers spectacular views across the Rhine landscape.

On the upper floor, a generous living and working space with pale-green panelling and fine parquet flooring is flooded with daylight through long rows of windows. To the northwest lies the inviting principal suite with en-suite bathroom. A charming children’s or guest bedroom also benefits from its own en-suite bathroom.

Beneath the exposed roof structure, an inspiring loft-like space opens up, allowing living and working to merge effortlessly. With its own kitchenette, Swedish stove, bedroom and bathroom, this level can also provide independent accommodation for family members or guests.

The large balcony set within the roof dormer creates the sensation of floating above the picturesque landscape. And in the basement, an exceptional wine cellar with massive stone walls and timber supports provides an atmospheric setting in which to taste the fine wines of the surrounding region.

From “Wassermusik”, the ever-changing colours and textures of the gently flowing Rhine can be enjoyed in countless ways — from the magnificent interiors, the balcony and outdoor terraces, from the idyllic garden, or directly from the estate’s own private riverbank.
