“White Cross”: An exemplary renovated & award-winning property

It is only rare to find a mountain village that has retained its originality as Splügen on the Hinterrhein. The Pass village with its distinctive patrician, Bündner and Walser houses is picturesquely situated at 1457 m above sea level at the junction of the San Bernardino and Splügen Pass — centuries of history are present everywhere here. For the exemplary protection of the townscape, Splügen received the Wakker Prize from Swiss Homeland Security in 1995.

The former “Weises Kreuz” säumerherberge, dating back to 1365, sits enthroned at the highest point of the old village center, visible from afar. The high-quality and tastefully restored hotel impresses with numerous characterful rooms, impressive vaulted rooms, panoramic dining room and terrace with wonderful views of the mountain village and the alpine peaks.

Everything in Splügen is within easy walking distance - shops, schools, dairy and the Splügen-Tambo cable car. The Rheinwald valley offers countless opportunities for hiking, skiing and climbing - from the Rofla Gorge to the source of the Rhine on the Rheinwaldhorn. In about 15 minutes you can reach Andeer with its mineral bath. Chur, Davos and Tessin are only around an hour away by car.

The fairly snow-sure ski area on the slopes of Piz Tambo has become an insider tip. Five ski lifts and a total of 30 kilometers of slopes offer both easy and challenging runs at up to 2215 m above sea level, including a children's area. For cross-country skiing, there is an 11 km long valley trail and an approximately 7.5 km long circular trail. In addition, a natural ice rink, a snowshoe trail, romantic winter hiking trails and a thrilling sled run attract visitors.

As early as Roman times, one of the most important Alpine crossings passed through Splügen, and until the 19th century, the house hosted merchants and travelers, including Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in 1788. The big village fire of 1716 destroyed the wooden parts of the hostel — before it was rebuilt in its present form in 1717. After the construction of a road across the Splügen Pass in 1822, the mountain village lost its importance.

In 1997, the listed property found a new owner, who extensively renovated it in 1998—2000. The successful combination of old and new earned an award and admission to “Swiss Historic Hotels”. The building technology is up to date with professional kitchen, floor heating and heat pump. The former haystable now comprises an impressive dining room with a breathtaking view.

Stone and creaking wooden stairs lead from the large entrance hall, through which the mule animals used to gallop, to the cozy guest rooms. Each room has its own character; some are made entirely of wood, others have rustic vaulted ceilings. The artfully panelled pine parlour with stone oven and the former kitchen with its archaic stone slabs are particularly impressive.

The house offers numerous uses - as a boutique hotel, as a cultural meeting place or as a spacious family home for living and working, as a first or second home. With its numerous distinctive rooms and magical location above the old village center, “White Cross” provides plenty of space for individuality, quality of life and future developments — a “good, safe place” in the original sense of its name — from the Romanesque “bun loe” and from the Latin “bonus locus.”
