A picture-perfect home in one of the most beautiful villages of the Domleschg valley
Following the course of the River Rhine southwards, the imposing Alpine peaks draw ever closer. Just before the dramatic Viamala Gorge, the landscape opens onto a sun-drenched terrace known as the Domleschg valley. Often referred to as the “orchard of Graubünden”, this region benefits from the shelter of the surrounding mountain ranges, allowing as many as 120 varieties of apples and 30 varieties of pears to thrive.
On the eastern valley slope lies the traditional mountain village of Scharans, remarkably well preserved and recognised as a site of national heritage significance. Along its elongated village centre are a prominent church, as well as stately farmhouses and bourgeois residences. Close to a gently flowing fountain and a village lime tree stands a home straight out of a picture book – “Cha Charin”. A village shop, post office, bus stop, primary school and municipal administration are all located just nearby.
In contrast to the tranquillity of Scharans, the nearby town of Thusis — the economic centre of the valley — offers a more urban atmosphere with a wide range of shops, restaurants, a hospital and cultural amenities. Scharans is exceptionally well connected, situated along one of the fastest Alpine transit routes via the San Bernardino Tunnel. To the north, the regional capital Chur can be reached quickly, while St. Moritz and the sun-drenched Ticino region lie to the south and east. Zurich, a global city, is only around 90 minutes away.
The magnificent mountain world of Graubünden offers virtually unlimited leisure opportunities: hiking along the Domleschg castle trail or the ViaSpluga, cycling, climbing, golfing and swimming in summer, and skiing, cross-country skiing and snowboarding in winter. Small, family-friendly ski areas are located nearby, while the major ski resorts of Laax and Lenzerheide are also within easy reach. Culinary experiences range from traditional mountain inns to world-class gastronomy, such as Schloss Schauenstein in Fürstenau.

The historic residence was carefully renovated in 2022 and adapted to contemporary living standards. The original building structure was preserved and complemented with bespoke, high-quality wooden fittings, creating a distinctive and elegant living atmosphere. From the upper floors, spectacular views open up across the village and the surrounding snow-covered Alpine peaks.
The entrance level, featuring a guest room, bathroom and separate WC, can also be used as an office or independent living unit. On the mezzanine level, the cosy living room reminiscent of traditional bourgeois and farmhouse parlours, the spacious dining area and the modern kitchen form the communicative heart of “Cha Charin ” — a place where people naturally come together. A multi-level covered balcony and garden area extend the living space outdoors.
The upper floor offers additional flexible bedrooms and living spaces as well as a generous bathroom. Under the roof, alongside a children’s or guest room, lies the atmospheric master bedroom with en-suite bathroom and a panoramic balcony, from which one seems to float above the valley.
“Cha Charin” combines contemporary living comfort with the charm of a historic village home — a place for those who value peace, nature and community, while not wanting to compromise on comfort and modern amenities.
